message from Prof. h.c. Joachim-Ernst Berendt, Baden-Baden, Sept.19th, 1994
It has been a long time: A project called "Flamenco Jazz" was introduced by me at the festival "Jazz Meets the World", the very first World music-festival ever. This was in 1967, at the "Berliner Jazz-Tage" (later called Jazz-Fest Berlin).
It was PACO DE LUCIA`S, who later on became JOHN MCLAUGHLIN´S partner, first performance at a Jazz festival. In the accompanying review I wrote how important it is for Jazz musicians to meet Flamenco musicians and perform with each other.
In the meantime Flamenco is a must and an important part in the modern international music scene. The indian classical music also. Therefore a meeting of Indian classical music and Flamenco was inevitable. One could say it is the logical result of what has been happening in the world music scene these past years. I am very happy to note, that it is the MUSIC ENSEMBLE OF BENARES that has dared to take this step. Here we can be sure, that the spirit of the integration and the artistic responsibility, which is characteristic for the Ensemble, is fully met.

message from the ambassador of India, Mr. Satinder K. Lambah, Bonn, March 28th, 1996
I am pleased to note the exciting new initiatives being pursued by the MUSIC ENSEMBLE OF BENARES in its endeavours to explore the threads of common roots of cultures seperated by vast physical distances. Of special interest is the "Kathak-Flamenco" project to which Mr. Günther Paust and his colleagues have been devoting their efforts. The dance concerts of this project have met unqualified success signifying the underlying simple universal nature of music and dance.
The MUSIC ENSEMBLE OF BENARES has carried out pioneering work in bringing the magic of classical traditions of India`s music and dance to a wide audience in Germany. Those efforts go a long way in promoting increased and multifaceted awareness among different peoples.
In an age when technology is transforming our world into a "global village", we need to have a better understanding of our past and traditions and the fundamental unity among various societies.
I wish Mr. Paust and the MUSIC ENSEMBLE OF BENARES every success in their commendable efforts to promote inter-cultural exchanges and their quest for seeking out the "unity in diversity".
