KATHAK - FLAMENCO

The idea, to combine the northindian Kathak dance with the spanish Flamenco came from Günther Paust in 1982. This was, when he founded the “Music Ensemble of Benares”.
The Gitanos (Gypsies) who wandered away from Rajasthan in India took the Flamenco with them to Andalusia. So it is not very surprising that these two forms of dance and music which at first appear to be so different have a lot in common – especially the melodies and rhythms for they have the same roots. Both, the “baile-flamenco” and the indian Kathak dance are danced rhythmically and vivaciously onto the ground.

Kathak is the most suitable of all classical Indian dance forms for this project because like Flamenco there is in the Kathak plents of room for improvisation. The Kathak dancer has to have the same rhythm training as the Tabla player. He produces his sound and thythm on the Tabla with his fingers and the base of his hands. The Kathak dancer has to reproduce it with her bare feets and her anklets. The Flamenco dancer and the Tabla player tries to be also in harmony with each other in the same way.

In this project not only do the two dance forms meet but also the instrumental and the vocals have similar roots to be found in Arabia. The Flamenco guitar and the bansuri-flute however do not have anything in common but this does not mean that it is any less exciting to hear them together.

Günther Paust has already in the last years, together with dancers and musicians, been able to present very colourful and varied programmes with emphasis on choreographic percision.
The artists have been working on a very exciting and fascinating theme fot the upcoming tour in this season.
The artists of the new “Kathak-Flamenco” project are as follows:
